Featured Intern: Kaitlyn Grady

Kaitlyn Grady attends University of Illinois Chicago School of Law. Prior to LCA, Kaitlyn Grady was a Judicial Extern for Judge Stephen Morgan.

Q: Many of our interns come to us with unique backgrounds in the arts. Do you have any personal background in the arts?
A: In Middle School I started performing in musicals. During my four years in high school, I acted in musicals, competed in speech, and competed in competitive theater. I was also president of my school’s speech and theater club. Further, I love creating art in my free time. I love to write, paint, draw, sew, and take photos. My favorite thing to do in my free time is to read

How did you hear about LCA?
I heard about LCA through many of my legal mentors. I want to be an intellectual property lawyer and almost all IP lawyers I met have recommended LCA.

What did you expect? Did anything here surprise you?
I expected to get a lot of experience with clients and that is exactly what I have received!

Do you have any favorite moments or projects from your time with us?
I am not sure I have a favorite moment, but I have loved to hear about peoples art. It is really cool to be able to feel like I am helping these artists further their art in a small way!

How has your experience at LCA connected with what you have been learning in law school?
Yes! Funny enough, it is connecting my professional responsibility class a lot because some clients will ask me legal questions and I am practicing my “sorry I can’t provide advice on this topic, but I will make note of your question” speech. I am also strengthening my knowledge of copyright and trademark!

Did you come into LCA hoping to get experience in a particular area of law? Have your interests changed at all?
I wanted experience working with clients looking for intellectual property legal help. I have gotten a lot of that experience! My interest has not changed but it has strengthened that I want to go into IP law and hopefully help artists still!

What’s next for you? Has your time at LCA helped you to narrow your options?
I am currently still applying to many IP summer jobs! LCA definitely helped me narrow my search to IP related jobs.

Do you hope to volunteer with LCA once you have your degree?
I definitely do. All of my mentors are still connected to LCA and I plan to volunteer as much as I can!

What value does an organization like LCA add to the arts community?
LCA provides a fresh breath for artists who need legal help. Most people I talk to are very grateful for LCA and the guidance it gives. I think LCA helps the community by allowing artists not to be fearful of legal issues but instead have a safe place to go when they need help!

Which tv-show/movie/song/book have you recently finished that you would recommend?
I am huge Bill Lawrence fan (scrubs is one of my all-time favorite tv shows) so, I think more people should be watching Shrinking on Apple TV. I have recently started binging Smallville, which is not the best tv show but I would recommend to anyone who loves a “bad” tv show to binge while they do other things. For songs, I have been loving Noah Kahan since 2017 so his newer album Stick Season is on repeat. Dawns by Zach Bryan and Maggie Rogers has also been on repeat for me.

What's a fun fact about you?
I love going to cons like Chicago Comic Con C2E2 with my oldest sister, so I have met many celebrities! Scrubs and Psych are tied as my favorite tv shows and I rewatch both shows every year.
