Understanding Story Rights

Description:

Sometimes the best inspiration comes from someone else’s story. If you’re writing a novel, screenplay, or short story based on another person’s creative work or life story, you may need to acquire the rights to that story.

Join Lawyers for the Creative Arts for an education program on story rights. You’ll learn about when you can rely on public information to write a story about someone else, and the interaction with rights of publicity, defamation, and privacy. We’ll discuss the importance of written agreements governing “life rights” and how they can help reduce the risk of defamation, privacy, and other claims.

We’ll also talk about how to spot a scam when you’re publishing, and things to consider when someone is looking to turn your written work into a film. There will be time for Q&A.
