Tactics to Avoid Art Censorship Online

Description:

Artists are increasingly encountering censorship online and on social media. Join the National Coalition Against Censorship, Don’t Delete Art, and Lawyers for the Creative Arts for a conversation about art censorship and strategies that can help artists share artistic work while minimizing the risk of getting banned/shadow banned, downranked, or flagged as inappropriate content.

This program will cover tips, including how captions and hashtags impact art censorship online. Plus, you’ll gain information on what to do if you are told that your work or account has violated “community guidelines,” and learn about Don’t Delete Art’s advocacy and support programs.

This free educational program will be followed by a question and answer session.

About the National Coalition Against Censorship:

Every generation of Americans faces new and significant challenges to free expression. For over 50 years, NCAC has acted as a first responder to protect this freedom, which is both a fundamental human right and a keystone of democracy in the ever-changing American nation. We promote freedom of thought and inquiry and oppose censorship. When controversy occurs, we encourage and facilitate dialogue between divergent voices and perspectives, including those that have historically been silenced.

The National Coalition Against Censorship was formed by a group of activists affiliated with the ACLU in response to the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Miller v. California, which narrowed First Amendment protections for sexual expression and opened the door to obscenity prosecutions. As an alliance of more than 50 national non-profits, including literary, artistic, religious, educational, professional, labor, and civil liberties groups, we have engaged in direct advocacy and education to support First Amendment principles for over 40 years.

About Don’t Delete Art:

Don’t Delete Art (DDA) strives to raise awareness and advocate for a more tolerant and inclusive digital environment for artists. We are dedicated to the protection and promotion of diverse forms of artistic expression on digital platforms, calling for companies to actively engage artists in the creation of more just and responsive moderation mechanisms and practices. DDA uses our platform and gallery to highlight censored voices and recognizes our position as an advocate and educator on the kinds of censorship artists face online and the role of digital platforms in ameliorating it.

The project is a collaboration between the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), Artists at Risk Connection, Freemuse, and artist-activists Emma Shapiro, Spencer Tunick, Savannah Spirit. It was convened in March 2020 by NCAC.
